Hello! My name is Arleigh Hood.
I’m a communication strategy consultant offering clear communication solutions so that you can be more effective and intentional when you speak, or write to the newcomers at your workplace.
The idea for this business began in 2022, when I was teaching workplace English to a housekeeper in a hotel. During our classes, I saw regular interactions with her leadership team, who were committed to diverse hiring.
I also saw these leaders talking too quickly and too loudly, sending lengthy texts and emails, and hanging flyers on the walls that my learner didn’t understand.
What these leaders didn’t know is that when their back was turned, my learner:
- looked to me to “translate” the information into clearer English
- recorded the interactions on her phones to replay and try to understand later
- felt routinely deflated that her English was no good
- questioned whether she should look for another job
This pattern of unsuccessful communication is one I’ve seen time and time again in workplaces: the intention of the communicator has been good, but the impact has resulted in missed messages and deadlines, confusion, workplace safety issues, and dropped balls.
“The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.”
George Bernard Shaw
